How To Shoot Fantasy Photos With A Green Screen

Green Screen Photography is gaining more and more in popularity, especially among small photography studios that wish to bring something new and innovative to their business – something that the large corporate photography studios don’t even bother with. Green screening, also known as chroma keying, is often the perfect edge that a small studio can use to blow the competition out of the water. Moreover, if your studio can carve out a niche with a specialty such as fantasy photography, you’ll stand out in the vast photography field.

In the world of green screen photography, there is the fantasy-theme option known as “sword and sorcery.” Some examples in this category include novels and movies like “Lord of the Rings” and role-based games such as “Dungeons and Dragons.” To shoot these fantasy-theme photos, pose the client dressed in a period costume in front of a green screen, holding a “weapon” or prop such as a sword, bow and arrow, or a magic wand. Then the photographer adds an appropriate digital background, such as a sensational nature scene or one featuring period architecture, such as a castle. And here’s a tip: If the client wants to come across in the photo with a soft, mystical look, fasten a piece of nylon to your camera lens with a rubber band. Instant softness and mystery added.

Science fiction is another well-known fantasy niche. “Babylon Five,” “Star Trek,” and “Star Wars” are some of the common themes in this genre.
But it also includes steam punk (a Victorian era character who uses steam to power today’s technology) and the time and inter-dimensional travel character of “Dr. Who.” Inside of this niche there are thousands of cos-players (those who enjoy putting on a costume whenever they can) who adore having their picture taken. Some ideas for amazing pictures would be: For space travel – like Star Trek – think the observation deck (a large window with a star field behind it) or Ten-Forward cantina (shoot a modern bar for the background). Use the interior of an old Victorian house for a steam punk shot.

A niche that is related to the first two, yet deserves a distinct category, is fairy tales. These are the pictures of fairy folk and other gentle creatures. Magical landscapes that relay an air of mystery and a bit of mischief work well for this genre. However, don’t think that fairy tales are only for small children, nor only for cos-players. Another group of people who love these types of photos are female high school seniors. Think about shooting portraits of them in their prom dresses, standing in front of this mystical backdrop. The result is that your client receives memories that are joyful and magical.

The final niche, which overlaps the others but is also one on its own, is known as video game cos-play and Anime. This type of photo requires Asian-inspired locations, both interiors and exteriors, as well as contrasting run-down warehouses or possibly historic sites that have only the barest traces of original buildings remaining.

Overall the thing to remember when shooting a fantasy photo is that no matter how strange or outlandish the costume may be, and no matter where in the world these characters are supposed to be, as long as you can make the picture look believable to the client, you will have repeat business for years to come.
